Rapid Assessment of the COVID-19 Impact on the Supply and Demand for Family Planning Services

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused tremendous upheaval to health delivery systems around the world. The first case of COVID-19 was confirmed on March 31, 2020 in Burundi. A major disruption in the supply of care was observed and this had an impact on a multitude of sectors, including the supply and demand for family planning services. This could hinder the achievement of Burundi’s targets, including an increase of contraceptive prevalence among married/in union women from 23% in 2016 to 40% in 2023.

La présente étude porte sur « l’ampleur et les causes d’abandon de la pratique contraceptive ainsi que les déterminants de l’utilisation des services de PF au Burundi ». Elle vise l’analyse approfondie de la qualité des soins offerts dans les services de planification familiale, de l’ampleur d’abandon de la pratique contraceptive et ses causes sous-jacentes ainsi que des facteurs susceptibles d’influencer la continuité de la pratique contraceptive.

Factors Associated With Contraceptive Use Among Antenatal Care Clients With 3 or More Children at a Central Hospital in Burundi: A Cross-Sectional Study. Strategies promoting widespread adoption of family planning and contraception methods have effectively decreased fertility rates and some of the associated negative consequences. Despite the implementation of health policies favouring and promoting birth control, the synthetic fertility rate in Burundi was still 5.5 children per woman in 2016, marginally down from 6.8 in the 1980s and in 2010.
