The UMUHIVU project, led by Share-Net Burundi and supported by the Netherlands Embassy in Burundi, aims to strengthen the capacities of civil society organizations (CSOs) led by women and youth in Burundi. In the face of harmful norms and restrictions on civic space, UMUHIVU positions itself as a catalyst to empower these organizations to play a crucial role in promoting social justice.
Main objective
The project seeks to create an enabling environment where CSOs can express themselves, coordinate, and influence public policies to build a more inclusive and equitable Burundi. Through capacity building and collaboration, these organizations are better equipped to defend the rights of women, youth, and marginalized groups.
Project approaches
- Capacity building: Emerging women- and youth-led CSOs receive tailored training to improve their internal management, advocacy, and ability to develop effective strategies.
- Creation of communities of practice: Spaces for exchange and collaboration are established, allowing CSOs working on same issues to co-create common strategies and learn from one another. The five communities of practice have been established around five themes: food security and nutrition, sexual and reproductive health and rights, private sector development, rule of law and youth.
- Changing perceptions of CSOs through media: In collaboration with journalists and influencers, the project highlights the key role of CSOs in the fight for social justice.
- Production of evidence-based Data: Reliable data is collected, translated, and disseminated to provide a solid foundation for CSO advocacy campaigns.
- Strategic advocacy: Links are established with key stakeholders to strengthen the influence of CSOs and help them promote concrete changes.
Expected impact
Through UMUHIVU, the project aims to strengthen 50 women- and youth-led organizations, establish 5 Communities of Practice, and implement concrete actions to promote social justice in Burundi.
Together, we are building a future where the voices of women and youth are heard, and social justice becomes a reality for all.
